Going nutty ! Wonderful Pistachios and Almonds review

Just in time for Christmas, we received some Wonderful Pistachios and Wonderful Almonds to review. That's not a personal judgement, that's their name - although now I've tried them, I do have to agree that they're rather lovely.

We all like pistachios here at The Madhouse but they can be a pain to eat. I've lost count of the number of times I've broken or snagged a nail trying to prise open a particularly recalcitrant one and I'm always worried the kids will break a tooth when they try to crack open the ones that are totally closed. In the bags of Wonderful Pistachios that we received, this wasn't an issue at all though - the shells seemed to be open wider and were much easier to prise open than our usual pistachios.

Time to get taste-testing ! They are beautifully fresh and the seasoning adds a lovely topnote. We started with the plain Roasted Unsalted ones (you can get Salted or Unsalted - great news if you're trying to limit your intake of salt, although I must admit, I prefer mine with a bit of salt) before moving on to the Salt & Pepper bag, which were even nicer. We'll definitely be looking out for the Sweet Chilli flavour too because they sound a bit different. Wonderful Pistachios are actually the UK’s only flavoured pistachio range. If you're watching your waistline (who isn't ?!), it's good to know that Wonderful Pistachios are easier on the waistband than most festive treats with just three calories per nut.

The Wonderful Almonds are very nice too. With three varieties - Natural, Roasted & Salted, Blanched - they are ideal for nibbling on in front of the TV, but can also be used in seasonal baking recipes. I crushed some to add some lovely crunch to a Pear, Pecan & Almond Clafoutis but they can also be added to savoury dishes, such as chicken, almond and apricot tagine.

  2. I love pistachios. You can buy shell-less ones here (bit expensive). Almonds are good too - both fill you up and have lots of good oils.
